Newbie Questions

Postby RMittelman » Mon Mar 08, 2010 4:42 pm

Hi,

This looks like a WAY cool program, and seems very easy to use. However, your documentation is not very clear.

For example, TAGS. It says what a tag is, but does not specify how to create one, or give any example. The main manual is very complete, except for that. I would suggest you give actual examples for each feature in the manual document.

So, for now, only 2 questions:
1: How do I add a tag?
2: What makes the "Docs:" items un-editable? Is it just the naming convention?

3: Ok, 3 questions: Am I missing something, or is there a way to make a totally readable text which links to a wiki word? for example, similar to a web link in a note:
Please [[go here]](WikiWord) to see this note?
If this is not already possible, please consider this an enhancement request.

Thanks...

I don't know about number 2, but try this for the other two:
1. Edit a note, the choose the second icon from the right (next to the trash can)
3. Try [[WikiLink|A nicer looking bit of text]]

Thanks Andrew.

Number 2: No biggie. I was just curious.
Number 3: Perfect!! It works just like you said. This further underscores the need for good documentation. Nowhere in all the Docs I read did it mention this technique of a friendly display for a wiki word. Curious that its syntax is so different than the friendly url display syntax...
Number 1: This works as described also. Thanks for the technique. Tags are described in concept in the docs, but missing is an explanation of how to use them. At first I thought it didn't work, because I created a tag and added it to the note, and nothing changed. I expected something to show in edit mode. But, now that I know how to find them in the search bar, I can at least use them.

Thanks again...

To the developer:

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE update the documentation, and include instructions and examples of each feature. Pretend you are explaining to a brand new user how to work a feature. This would save a lot of time for us newbie types. I printed out and read all of the documentation, and still I needed to go on the forum to find out how to do the simplest features.
This is an AMAZING program. Help us use it properly.

Here is a question about tags.

Following a post in the tips forum, I created a note and added various tags to it, such as:

@Call John Doe
@Todo Buy groceries
@Call Quentin Tarentino

Then in my "main" note, I put items like:

** Calls **
{{action @Call}}

** To Do's **
{{action @Todo}}

So when I display the page, it looks like this:

Calls
@Call

  • John Doe
  • Quentin Tarentino

To Do's
@Todo

  • Buy Groceries

So the question is: What is with the "@Call" and "@Todo" right below the bold text? Isn't there a way to make the tag and action method work without actually showing the tag at "run time"?

Thanks...

Hello,

Docs: and Special: are not allowed in user notes since there may be new uses for these in future upgrades.

Point taken about the manual, I will review and see what extra information can be added. Sometimes developers aren't the best people to write documentation for new users ;o)

I have removed the @Call: being added automatically to the start of the {{action}} list in the development version of Trunk Notes. In the next release this will be gone!

Matthew,

Wow, great response time!

Thanks for the reply. I'm assuming by removing the @Call, you actually mean you are removing ANY action word used in this manner, right.

I LOVE your program. Since I'm a developer myself, I may bug from time to time about features.

Keep up the great work!

That's right. The {{action name}] function no longer adds the name: before displaying the list of items.

Any feature suggestions are always gratefully received!

Hey

I just got Trunk Notes, I cant believe this has been out for a year and I didnt know, really liking the power of it so far. One question,

Is there a way to have a generic search on {{dueinnext}}

for example I have a couple of Contexts and on my home page I would like a snapshot of what is coming in the next couple of days.

Do I have to add

{{dueinnext 3, @call]]
{{dueinnext 3, @Wife]]
{{dueinnext 3, @Home]]

or can I have something like

{{dueinnext 3, @*]]

Which can search anything that I have tagged that is due in the next 3 days?

Cheers

Hello,

You have to have a separate dueinnext for each. There are no predefined action words which can be used in Trunk Notes, so you have to tell it what to search for otherwise it would have no frame of reference when looking through the wiki entries.
